Varicose veins are enlarged and twisted veins that usually appear on the lower limbs (legs). Veins are blood vessels that carry blood return to the heart, and they have valves to prevent blood from flowing backward. When these valves weaken or fail, blood can pool in the affected veins, causing them to swell and become varicose.

Varicose veins often look swollen, twisted, and may be blue or dark purple. They can bulge out from the surface of the skin. While some people with varicose veins may not experience symptoms, others may have experience pain in the legs, a feeling of heaviness or discomfort, and swelling. Varicose veins can be usually caused by genetics, aging process, pregnancy, obesity and also prolonged periods of standing or sitting.
