Home / Kidney Stones

Kidney stones are hard deposits that form in the kidneys and the urinary tract. These deposits are made of minerals and salts that stick together and create small, pebble-like structures. Kidney stones canvary in size, from as small as a grain of sand to as large as a golf ball.

Kidney stones form when substances in the urine, such as calcium, oxalate, and phosphorus, become highly concentrated and crystalize. The symptoms of kidney stones can include severe pain in the back or side, pain during urination, blood in the urine, and a frequent urge to urinate.

There are different types of kidney stones based on the substances that make them up. The most common types include calcium stones, oxalate stones, uric acid stones, and struvite stones. Certain factors increase the risk of developing kidney stones, including dehydration, a diet high in salt or certain minerals, obesity, and certain medical conditions that affect how the body absorbs and eliminates calcium.
