I recently treated a patient who appeared as if he had suffered a severe fire accident, with intense skin inflammation and peeling. The cause? A drug allergy following fever treatment. The patient, unaware of the allergy, continued his medication, leading to serious complications.
What is it?
Drug allergy is an adverse reaction to medication, not due to any medical error but based on individual sensitivity.
Common Symptoms
– Skin rash or itching
– Swelling or inflammation
– Peeling or blistering skin
– Shortness of breath or wheezing
Is it Serious?
Drug allergies can range from mild to life-threatening. It’s important to identify symptoms early to avoid complications.
How to Identify a Drug Allergy?
1. Onset of unusual symptoms: Any new reactions after taking medication should be monitored.
2. Early signs: Mild rashes or itching can indicate a beginning allergic reaction.
3. Gradual worsening: If symptoms worsen, it’s crucial to stop the medication and consult your doctor.
Prevention and Steps to Take:
– Stop the medication at the first sign of an allergic reaction.
– Report immediately to your doctor for alternative treatments.
– Be aware: If you have a known drug allergy, always inform healthcare providers.
In this case, the patient was treated with Siddha medicine to manage the allergic reactions and support skin healing. I also educated him and his family on the importance of early identification and reporting drug allergies.
Message:
Drug allergies can affect anyone and should be treated with care. Educating yourself and those around you can prevent serious complications.
